Wilbedone Economic Development Project
In 2001, Thoma assisted the Town of Cortlandville in securing $212,000 to assist Wilbedone, Inc. in purchasing equipment for their new facility. Wilbedone started in 1988 in Cortlandville and moved to larger facilities in the Town in 2000. The company fabricates and installs “solid surface” countertops and competes with products manufactured under the names of Corian, Avonite, and Gibraltar. The company markets primarily to retail kitchen and bath dealers.
The use of granite in the fabrication of kitchen and bath countertops is one of the hottest and fastest growing trends. The low interest loan from the Town of Cortlandville allowed Wilbedone to purchase equipment to fabricate granite countertops. This action allowed the company to grow from 15 employees to 36, become a “one-stop-shop” for all of a home’s countertop needs, and to significantly increase the company’s customer base.
Wilbedone is doing very well in this new venture. The Town of Cortlandville will be able to reinvest loan repayments from Wilbedone back into the community through more business loans and other eligible community development activities.
