Town of Bainbridge
Bainbridge is located in southeastern Chenango County, on the banks of the Susquehanna River in the Appalachian region of New York State. The Town is centered at the intersection of State Routes 206 and 7. Interstate 88 bisects the Town. The Town of Bainbridge began as the Town of Jericho before its name was changed in the early 1800’s, but after it was renamed decreased in size to its current boundaries. The Town’s history follows an evolutionary sequence from a transportation cross roads, to a major source of fine lumber, then a busy dairy production area. Home to 3,401 people, the Town of Bainbridge also hosts the General Clinton Canoe Regatta, a canoe race that is named in honor of General James Clinton of the 1779 Revolutionary War "Sullivan-Clinton Expedition" down the Susquehanna River. The idea for the General Clinton Canoe Regatta was conceived by Charles Hinkley and a group of local businessmen in an effort to attract tourism to the local area. In 1963, two canoes made a pilot trip down the Susquehanna River from Cooperstown to Bainbridge. This voyage took 18 hours and 25 minutes. The first race was held July 4th, 1963 and had 45 entries. Winners finished in 11 hours 45 minutes. Today, the race record is 6 hours 34 minutes, 34 seconds. First place prize in 1963 was $200 and today's first place prize is $3000. The Town was also the home to the Elmer’s manufacturing facility, which produced Elmer’s Glue. |
